November 2-3, 2024

The Burton D. Wechsler National First Amendment Moot Court Competition is a renowned tournament that consistently attracts top competitors from across the country. This competition has presented the opportunity to argue cutting-edge cases in front of prominent judges in the nation鈥檚 capital for twenty-eight years.Past competition problems have addressed a wide variety of First Amendment issues, including speech by public officials, municipal regulation of businesses, the rights of public-school students, and legislator-led prayer.听

Kudos to the WCL Moot Court Honor Society (MCHS) for an outstanding Wechsler First Amendment Moot Court competition! This last weekend, 27 teams from across the U.S. competed in a well-organized event, thanks to the tireless work of our MCHS students. Michigan State Law won the final round against Loyola New Orleans, presided over by respected judges from the U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals.

Special recognition goes to Wechsler co-directors Sabrina March and Noor Chawla, along with MCHS leaders Adele Cohen, Sophie Gray, Lauren Atkins, and Adam Loch, who ensured the event ran smoothly from logistics to final rounds. A heartfelt thanks to Professor Paul Figley for creating a timely and thought-provoking case problem, as well as the many alumni, faculty, and staff volunteers.
