Thematic Focus Areas
As part of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Torture, Professor Mendez, working closely with the Anti-Torture Initiative, produced thematic reports on a wide range of issues relating to the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, where were presented to the UN. The thematic reports present global trends and practices pertaining to the particular issue, assess how such trends and practices impact the prohibition of torture, draw conclusions about possible emerging human rights norms, and provide recommendations to prevent such future treatment.
Currently, the ATI continues to conduct research and writing, public advocacy around, and undertake specific projects in, a number of the topics covered by Professor Mendez while he served as the Special Rapporteur on Torture, as well as new topics related to the ATI's global anti-torture efforts.
